Diya Spoon Relay: Diwali Kitty Party Game Rules and Twists
Diya Spoon Relay is a Diwali kitty party game where two teams pass a small LED or unlit clay diya down a line from spoon to spoon, with each lady holding a steel spoon in her mouth and her hands behind her back. The first team to get 5 diyas into its thali wins, but the last lady in the line must say a full Diwali wish to the host with the spoon still in her mouth before she can drop the diya. It needs only spoons, diyas, two bowls and two thalis, and takes about 10 minutes for 8 to 20 ladies.

What do you need to play Diya Spoon Relay?
- One clean steel spoon per lady (each uses her own)
- 10 LED tealight diyas or small unlit clay diyas (5 per team)
- Two bowls to hold the diyas at the start
- Two thalis or plates at the finish
- A phone timer
How to play Diya Spoon Relay, step by step
- Split the group into two teams and stand each team in a straight line. Put a bowl of 5 diyas at the start of each line and an empty thali at the end.
- Every lady holds a steel spoon in her mouth by the handle and keeps her hands behind her back. Only the first lady may use her hands, once, to place a diya on her spoon.
- Pass the diya from spoon to spoon down the line without using hands. If it falls, it goes back to the start bowl.
- The last lady walks to the host and says a full Diwali wish with the spoon still in her mouth, for example "Happy Diwali, didi!". Then she tips the diya into the thali and the next diya starts.
Rules: how do you win?
- Touching the diya or spoon with your hands sends the diya back to the start.
- A dropped diya goes back to the start bowl.
- If the wish is incomplete or she bursts out laughing, she must say it again.
- The first team with all 5 diyas in its thali wins.
Fun twists to make it crazier
- Blindfold the last lady and let her team guide her to the host by voice.
- Make every lady spin once on the spot before passing the diya.
- The wish must include the host's name and the name of one Diwali sweet.
Tips for the host
- Never use a lit diya or candle. LED tealights or empty clay diyas only.
- Give every lady her own washed spoon so nobody shares.
- Flat-bottomed diyas balance better than round ones, so start with those.
